Facing the Unknown.

by Divine Domesticity on March 10th, 2009

This week has been rough so far, and it doesn't look like it will get much better. Living on one income is very hard, especially when the income is very low. We've been struggling with managing our finances the past year, I won't lie.

Yesterday we got the news that my husbands employer is laying off employees in three areas of the company, my husbands division being one of them. He spent the day watching his friends being escorted out of the building. Immediately upon arriving for his shift, he watched a friend who had been with the company ten years leave. Shortly after, another friend who trained him when he was hired was gone. A lot of people leaving, all day long, and it looks like it will continue this way for several days until they have finished.

We made it through day one. It was rough on both of us...we're hoping for the best but bracing for the worst  this week.

Edited to add: It looks like we made it through this round of layoffs. I guess I should be excited but I still have a sick feeling in my stomach from the whole situation. Bleh.

My husband has been unemployed since January 1st. It's a tough world right now. I will be praying that your husband doesn't lose his job! Hang in there. :)

So sorry. I know the anxiety that comes with this. My husband just made it through a round of layoffs, but they are laying of thousands more in the next 18 months. You just never know and that is such a horrible feeling. :(

survivor guilt is a very real thing - don't be afraid to get out there (even if it's just onto websites) and discuss it with others. sometimes it helps to share.

Oh dear. I'll keep you all in my thoughts and hope that he doesn't get laid off. We're looking at lots of layoffs where I work too. Thankfully I'm ok but I've already had to tell 10 of my staff they will out of a job. It sucks, it really sucks.

Oh I am thinking of you both so much!! Tim was made redundant last March for health reasons and actually finally found work in December so we had the "one income that isn't enough to survive on" before the credit crisis truly hit and it was HARD. I had to change jobs and I've actually moved into a role where the redundancies happened before I got there and we now work on about a third of the staff they apparently used to have whilst trying to offer the same service. It is weird for me because I never knew these people that worked there for 10, 15, 20 years and then were suddenly let go and yet here I am fresh-faced in a role that wasn't there when they were sacked. And those who survived the redundancies are so bitter - it is so hard for those left in the job like your husband as well as for those who have already lost... because his work load will go up, there is guilt as to why you survived and fear that the next time it could be you... I truly feel for you both and will be crossing my fingers for you!

Bless you both! I know its rough right now and I'm grateful for my retail job even though the pay isn't great. Its a job! I'll keep you all in my thoughts. And in the meantime, pinch those pennies and keep on doing what you've been doing. You'll all be fine. :) And here's to a better week for you!
